SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO
Proctor is waiting to visit a Sugar and as the guard lets him in and he sits down, both men pick up the phones to talk. They exchange mutual greetings and Proctor tries to assure Sugar that the man responsible for his incarceration will not go unpunished. Sugar says to leave him alone and tries to blame himself for his own incarceration while Proctor retaliates by saying he should be in prison, not Sugar. Sugar explains that he is a fighter and he knew he had the guy beat, but he just kept going out of anger. Proctor tells him the story of the how Sugar saved him from a rattlesnake when he was working for Kai's father. He uses that story and draws similarities to their current situation with the man that came at Proctor with a crowbar. Sugar says a person is not a rattlesnake and tells him that revenge is not worth Kai sacrificing his future. Kai asks if there is anything he can do for him before he goes and Sugar tells Kai to "Just for this once let it go."
